Here at The Great Hall at Mains, we provide an exclusive setting in which to celebrate some of the most memorable moments in your life.

The Great Hall has been approved as a venue for marriages as an alternative to a Church or Registry Office under Section 26(1)(bb) of the Marriage Act 1949, and for Civil Partnerships under Section 6 (3A)(a) of the Civil Partnership Act 2004.

Guidance for those wishing to marry on approved premises.

If you are resident in Lancashire you will first need to contact the Ceremonies Officer for the area in which you live. The Ceremonies Officer will arrange an appointment for you, at a Lancashire Registration Office, to give a formal notice of your intention to marry. If you reside outside of Lancashire you will need to contact the Registration Office in the district where you live.

The Lancashire North Ceremonies Officer is based at the Lancaster Registration Office and deals with marriage ceremonies in Lancaster, Lune Valley and Wyre.

The couple should be advised that only the Superintendent Registrar can permit a civil, non-religious ceremony. Any music, reading, words or performances that form any part of the ceremony must be secular. The content and personalising of the ceremony must be agreed in advance with the Superintendent Registrar who will be attending the ceremony.

You may provide your own music for before and after the ceremony, however, any rights of copyright for music, readings, etc. permitted at the ceremony are a matter for the couple and the holder of the approval. No food and drink may be sold or consumed in the room in which a marriage ceremony takes place for one hour before that ceremony.

Your Wedding Ceremony

If you decide to hold your Wedding Ceremony and Reception at The Great Hall, it is useful to know how the day proceeds once guests have arrived for your big day.

Upon arrival at The Great Hall, wedding guests park their cars at the side of the Hall and make their way through the reception, into the main bar area, and out onto the grounds. The Bride Groom, Best Man and any Ushers, usually arrive before the Wedding Party so they are on hand to greet guests and have photographs taken.

The Registrars who perform the Ceremony arrive 30 minutes before, so that they are able to meet with the Bride Groom to check his details, before the Bride arrives. Once it has been announced that the Bride has arrived at the side of the Hall, guests take their seats in the ceremony area. Your chosen ceremonial musicians will play background music before the Bride enters.

During this time, the Registrars also meet with the Bride to check her details, before the Ceremony can begin. The Registrars will then ask the guests to stand as the music plays, and the Bride, along with any Bridesmaids, her Father, or any Pageboys make their entrance.

The Ceremony lasts for approximately 20 minutes, dependent upon any readings you may have, or musical intervals.

Once the register has been signed, the Bride and Groom will make their way up the aisle as Husband & Wife, and out of the Hall onto the grounds, followed by their guests. During the Ceremony, the Wedding Car will have parked outside the Hall, ready for photographs. Drinks will be served outside (weather permitting) and photographs are taken.
